The ambitious Belagavi Ring Road (NH848R) project, designed to bypass city traffic and enhance regional connectivity, is seeing varied progress across its three distinct packages. While land acquisition has reached advanced stages in some sectors, forest clearances and administrative shifts remain focal points for the project’s timeline.
Package 1: Administrative Re-routing and Land Progress
Route: Goa side (NH-748) to Pune side (NH-48) | Length: 34.480 km
Package 1, which represents a significant stretch of the bypass, recently underwent a major administrative change. While the project was initially awarded to GR Infraprojects Ltd in March 2023, the Letter of Award (LOA) was withdrawn on May 16, 2024, due to administrative reasons.
- Financials: The total capital cost is estimated at ₹1,628.21 Cr, with civil costs at ₹1,035.68 Cr.
- Land Acquisition: Significant progress has been made with 3D notifications published in June 2023.
- Current Status: * 3G awards have been completed for 12 out of 17 villages.
- Structure valuation and ROW (Right of Way) pillar installations are finished in 15 villages.
- A revised land acquisition cost of ₹621.75 Cr is currently awaiting approval.
Package 2: Western and Partial Eastern Bypass
Route: NH-48 to NH-748 and SH-54 | Length: 23.733 km
Package 2 bridges the Western Bypass with a portion of the Eastern Bypass. The scrutiny of PATSC (Public Accounts Trust Steering Committee) documents has been underway since July 2023.
- Key Stats: Approximately 160 hectares of land across 13 villages are marked for acquisition.
- Infrastructure Status: As of May 1, 2026, structure valuations and ROW installations are still pending.
- Upcoming Milestones: While the 3D notification was published in 2023, its publication in local newspapers is still awaited to finalize the process.
Package 3: Eastern Bypass and Forest Challenges
Route: SH-54 to NH-48 (Pune side) | Length: 11.174 km
Package 3 completes the ring but faces the most complex environmental hurdles, as 9.1 km of the alignment traverses through Reserved Forest Area.
- Forest Clearance: After an initial proposal from 2019 was dropped due to delays, a fresh proposal was submitted in August 2023.
- Field Progress: Recent milestones as of late 2024 include:
- Completion of boundary stone fixing.
- Completion of tree enumeration and submission of details to the Forest Department.
- Range Forest site inspections were successfully conducted in July 2024.
- Acquisition: This package requires 60 hectares, of which roughly 27.267 hectares is forest land.
