The high-speed rail link connecting Karnataka’s capital to the northern hub of Belagavi is beginning to find its rhythm. Despite a lukewarm reception during its debut, the Bengaluru–Belagavi Vande Bharat Express is reporting a steady uptick in ridership, signaling a shift in travel preferences for North Karnataka commuters.
A Tale of Two Directions
While the train has been operational for nearly nine months, South Western Railway (SWR) data reveals a distinct disparity in travel patterns between the two cities. From August 2025 to April 2026, the service generated approximately ₹8.9 crore in revenue, though occupancy rates vary significantly by route:

The primary factor cited for the lower occupancy on the return leg is the current schedule. The train departs Belagavi at 5:35 AM, a slot that many local passengers find inconveniently early.
Railway observers and frequent commuters suggest that this “crack-of-dawn” departure is the main deterrent for those who would otherwise choose the premium service. Many travelers still opt for alternative modes that allow for a slightly later start to their day, leading to calls for a timetable revision to better align with passenger needs.
