Aequs Aerospace Cluster Sets Green Manufacturing Benchmark in India

In a major sustainability milestone for Karnataka’s industrial sector, the Aequs Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Belagavi has achieved near 100% renewable energy usage, emerging as one of India’s leading examples of environmentally responsible manufacturing.

The industrial ecosystem, popularly known as the Belagavi Aerospace Cluster (BAC), has transitioned almost entirely to green energy through a combination of rooftop solar installations, open-access renewable power procurement, and renewable energy supplied through the state electricity network. The achievement significantly reduces the cluster’s carbon footprint while ensuring uninterrupted and cost-effective power supply for industries operating within the campus.

Spread across more than 250 acres, the cluster is India’s first notified precision engineering and aerospace-focused SEZ. The integrated energy framework currently serves over 35 industrial units, including multinational and Indian companies engaged in aerospace manufacturing and engineering activities.

According to Aequs Infra, the renewable energy transition has helped businesses within the cluster lower operational costs while improving sustainability performance. The company estimates that its integrated infrastructure model reduces operating expenses by more than 30 percent for industries located within the SEZ.

The cluster’s unique ecosystem model also contributes to emission reduction by bringing the entire aerospace manufacturing value chain—from raw materials to finished components—into a single location. This has drastically reduced transportation requirements, cutting the movement of aerospace parts from thousands of kilometres to just a few hundred metres within the campus.

Speaking on the achievement, Aequs Infra CEO Shyam Kalyanasundaram stated that sustainability has been integrated into the design and operation of the industrial ecosystem. He noted that the Belagavi facility demonstrates how large-scale manufacturing can successfully adopt renewable energy while maintaining reliability, efficiency, and competitiveness.

The accomplishment, announced around World Environment Day, further strengthens Belagavi’s reputation as a key aerospace and precision manufacturing hub while showcasing how industrial growth and environmental responsibility can progress together.
