The construction of the new Terminal-2 building at Belagavi Airport in Sambra has reached its final stage and is expected to be inaugurated within the next two months, according to BJP Member of Parliament Jagadish Shettar.
Speaking at the Yatri Suvidha Diwas (Passenger Amenities Day) programme organized by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Belagavi Airport on Monday, Shettar said the new terminal would significantly enhance passenger facilities and strengthen air connectivity in the region.
The MP expressed confidence that additional flight services connecting Belagavi to major metropolitan cities across the country would be introduced after the inauguration of the new terminal.
“I have held discussions with several airlines to provide more flight services from Belagavi to various metropolitan cities. These efforts will bear fruit once the new terminal becomes operational,” he said.
Highlighting the strategic importance of Belagavi, Shettar noted that the city serves as a key hub in North Karnataka and is home to a historic airport. He said several initiatives have been undertaken for the airport’s development in recent years.
The MP also pointed out that the aviation sector has been affected by ongoing international conflicts, leading to reduced flight operations due to fuel shortages and other challenges. However, he expressed optimism that the industry would regain momentum once the global situation stabilizes.
“The aviation sector has suffered due to the ongoing wars. Flight operations have reduced because of fuel shortages and related issues. Once the war ends, the sector will recover and continue its growth trajectory,” he said.
Praising the Central Government’s efforts in expanding aviation infrastructure, Shettar said the Narendra Modi-led government has significantly strengthened airports across the country. He credited the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme for bringing about a major transformation in India’s aviation sector by improving regional connectivity.
As part of the event, Shettar inaugurated the Yatri Suvidha Diwas programme by planting saplings at the airport premises. Airport Director S. Thyagarajan, officials of the Airports Authority of India, members of the Aviation Consultative Committee, and other dignitaries were present.
The Department of Kannada and Culture also organized the cultural programme “Kala Nadige Nimma Balige” at the airport in association with the Airports Authority of India and the Karnataka Government, adding a cultural touch to the event.
