In a major move to reinforce aviation security standards, a high-level security review meeting was convened at Belagavi Airport. The crucial session was jointly chaired by Sh. Raj Kumar Bhoomla, Regional Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (RD-BCAS), and Sh. V Sreejith, Assistant Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (AD-BCAS).
The strategic meeting brought together key airport stakeholders, security heads, and senior representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to evaluate operational safety, threat mitigation strategies, and future-readiness protocols.
Extensive Site Inspection at Terminal-2
Following the formal briefing, the top BCAS leadership led an extensive, hands-on inspection of the ongoing construction at the Terminal-2 (New Terminal Building) site.
The team scrutinized architectural layouts, access control planning, electronic surveillance infrastructure, and perimeter protection systems to ensure the facility meets absolute security compliance before its operations scale up.
The key focal points of the review included:
- Infrastructure Security: Auditing structural safeguards and passenger checkpoints within the upcoming Terminal-2 facility.

- Future-Proofing Layouts: Ensuring seamless installation of screening and baggage handling technology inside the new Terminal-2 building.

Next-Gen Infrastructure: Key Features of Terminal-2
The ongoing expansion, developed at an estimated cost of ₹223 crore, represents a massive upgrade to northern Karnataka’s aviation infrastructure. Designed to handle a peak capacity of 2,400 passengers at a time, the brand-new terminal introduces several major operational and cultural features:
- ​Heritage-Inspired Architecture: The terminal design beautifully blends modern aviation infrastructure with local history. The facade features intricately carved pillars inspired by the city’s 1,000-year-old Kamal Basadi temple, while the interior roof mirrors its historic pavilion.
- ​Enhanced Airside Capacity: The project expands the aircraft parking apron from 3 to 12 bays, allowing the airport to handle narrow-body jets like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 seamlessly.
- ​Modern Passenger Amenities: Terminal-2 will feature 4 modern aerobridges, 14 check-in counters, dual baggage conveyor systems for arrivals and departures, and an expanded taxi link.
- ​Kittur Rani Channamma Museum: A dedicated visual museum and sculpture installation will be housed inside the terminal, portraying the life, military training, and historic resistance of the legendary warrior queen against British rule.
