In a major development for North Karnataka’s electrical infrastructure, Belagavi district is poised to receive a state-of-the-art power transmission network. The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has formally initiated the licensing process for a major project proposed by New Delhi-based Mekhali Power Transmission Limited.
Project Highlights & Technical Overview
Developed under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) framework, the project aims to significantly enhance grid stability, support local industries, and meet the district’s growing energy demands:
- Core Substation: Construction of a 2×500 MVA, 400/220/33 kV Air-Insulated Substation (AIS) situated at Mekhali village in Raibag Taluk.
- Transmission Network: Multiple 400 kV and 220 kV double-circuit lines utilizing high-capacity Quad Moose and Twin Zebra conductors.
- Key Interconnections: The new grid will connect directly with regional substations, including Yalwar, Dhoni, Chikkodi-Mugalkhod, Kudachi, Mahalingpur, and the industrial hub at AEQUS (Hathargi).
- Execution Timeline: The project is targeted for completion within 24 months from its effective commencement date.
Regulatory Process & Public Hearing
The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) recommended granting the transmission licence in July 2026, following which KERC published notices for public feedback.
Stakeholders, industry representatives, and local residents have a 15-day window from the notification date to submit written suggestions or objections supported by an affidavit to the Secretary of KERC in Bengaluru.
A formal public hearing will be held on September 1, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the KERC Court Hall in Bengaluru before final regulatory approvals are issued.
