IndiGo’s Belagavi–Delhi Direct Flight Completes Three Years

Marking a major milestone in North Karnataka’s regional aviation landscape, IndiGo’s direct flight route between Belagavi Airport (IXG) and New Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport – DEL) has officially completed three successful years of operations.

Inaugurated in October 2023, the non-stop link revived and cemented an essential air corridor connecting the political and commercial heart of the national capital with Belagavi.

Before 2023, budget carrier SpiceJet used to operate daily flights on this route, establishing substantial passenger traffic before the airline discontinued operations due to operational and fleet constraints. Recognizing the critical gap left in the region’s air connectivity, IndiGo stepped in to restore the vital sector using its Airbus A320 fleet.

A Crucial Bridge for North Karnataka

The Belagavi–Delhi service has grown into an indispensable economic lifeline for travelers across North Karnataka, South Maharashtra, and Goa, serving key sectors:

  • Defense & Armed Forces: Belagavi is home to major installations, including the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC), the Commando Training Wing, and the Air Force Station. The direct flight cut transit times to South Block and service headquarters from an entire day of multi-modal travel to approximately 2.5 hours.
  • Industrial & Trade Hub: As one of the country’s prominent foundry, machining, and precision engineering clusters, Belagavi’s manufacturing fraternity relies on the sector for same-day business meetings and trade expos in the National Capital Region (NCR).
  • Healthcare & Education: The link provides seamless connectivity for students, faculty, and visiting consultants frequenting the region’s premier medical and higher education institutions.

Sustained Demand and Proactive Leadership

Over its three-year journey, the route has experienced operational adjustments, including temporary scheduling shifts and frequency modifications caused by nationwide airline fleet maintenance and seasonal constraints.

However, sustained passenger volume and proactive intervention by regional representatives, including Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar, Former Rajya Sabha MP Iranna Kadadi, and Union Civil Aviation authorities, played a decisive role in maintaining stability on the route.

Former MP Iranna Kadadi was instrumental during the flight’s initial launch and continuous advocacy, while current MP Jagadish Shettar and aviation officials have consistently engaged with airline leadership to ensure steady frequencies and dependable schedules matching passenger traffic.

Looking Ahead

As Belagavi Airport (IXG) expands its footprint, trade bodies and passenger associations continue to advocate for enhanced slot optimization, late-evening connections, and expanded belly cargo facilities for regional perishables and industrial parts.

Three years in, the success of IndiGo’s Belagavi–Delhi service stands as proof of North Karnataka’s robust air travel market and the vital impact of sustained public-private collaboration in regional connectivity.
