Proving once again that while Mysuru is the destination for Dasara, Belagavi is energy-unmatched when it comes to experiencing the true spirit of Karnataka Rajyotsava.
The border city witnessed a historic celebration this year, beginning with a massive midnight kickoff and culminating in a day-long spectacle where over 5 lakh Kannadigas converged to send a powerful message of regional pride and unity.
Midnight Ignition: The Grand Launch at 12:00 AM
The celebrations kicked off with unmatched fervor right at midnight on November 1st. Defying the late hour, nearly 30,000 to 50,000 people gathered to welcome Karnataka Rajyotsava. The midnight air erupted with the thunderous sounds of bursting crackers and vibrant cheer.
Adding a special milestone to the midnight launch, a brand-new Kannada movie song was officially launched, sending the crowd into a frenzy as popular social media influencers made a grand entry onto the stage, elevating the midnight celebrations to new heights.
A Grand 12-Hour Day Spectacle
Following the midnight launch, the main daytime procession started briskly at 10:00 AM and continued unabated until 10:30 PM. The iconic Rani Channamma Circle—along with the Sangolli Rayanna Circle, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Circle, and connecting arteries like Lingaraj College Road, Kaktives, Bogarves, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Road—brimmed with ecstatic crowds.
Everywhere one looked, Kannada flags fluttered proudly. Thousands of youth and children adorned their cheeks with red-and-yellow face paint and wore traditional Kannada shawls across their shoulders, establishing a festive atmosphere that echoed through day and night.
Gen-Z Energy and Cultural Floods
Powered by booming sound systems and high-energy DJ sets, Gen-Z participants brought unmatched enthusiasm to the streets, dancing tirelessly to timeless anthems like “ಹುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ನಾಡಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಬೇಕು”, “Namma Avva Kano Kannada”, and “Baarisu Kannada Dindimava”.
Adding to the grandeur of the event were over 150 elaborately decorated tableaux (Roopaka Vahanas). Floods of historical and cultural replicas captured the audience’s imagination, including:
- Tributes to historical legends such as Emperor Pulakeshin II of the Chalukya dynasty, Maharshi Valmiki, Jagajyoti Basaveshwara, Kittur Rani Channamma, and Sangolli Rayanna.
- A striking idol of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari seated atop a simulated elephant.
- Replicas of the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha, the Aihole Durga Temple, and thematic displays highlighting farmer struggles and drought resilience.
- A little girl dressed as Rani Channamma who became a major center of attraction during the march.
International Flavour and Seamless Security
The celebrations transcended borders, drawing international attention. Robert, an American visitor currently in Belagavi for personal work, joined the festivities draped in a traditional Kannada shawl. Expressing his awe, he shared how delighted he was to witness such massive community engagement, adding that he has grown to deeply love India, Karnataka, and the warmth of Belagavi’s people.
Local resident Aruna Hiremath, speaking to the media, noted that no other place matches the sheer scale and fervor of Belagavi’s Rajyotsava, calling it a true testament to the strength and unity of Kannadigas.
Under the leadership of City Police Commissioner Prakash Nikam, DCP Narayan Baramani, and DCP Niranjan Raj Urs, extensive security arrangements were deployed to ensure a peaceful celebration. Additionally, local organizations like Vijaya Ortho and Trauma Centre set up emergency medical camps at Channamma Circle to assist attendees, ensuring the grand event concluded safely and smoothly.
