Belagavi Power Grid Gets Smarter: KPTCL Rolls Out High-Tech ‘Hybrid’ Network

In a major move to revamp the city’s power infrastructure and meet the rising demand for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) has launched a massive modernization project to set up a high-capacity hybrid power distribution network across the district.

This major technical upgrade comes on the heels of widespread public outrage against the Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM). A failure in HESCOM’s distribution network during the very first rains left rural areas in darkness for three to four days, while several urban neighborhoods endured agonizing power outages lasting 30 to 40 hours.

Seeking a permanent fix to these recurring grid collapses, the state’s power generation arm, KPCL, and transmission wing, KPTCL, have aggressively shifted focus toward establishing a robust hybrid current network.

Instant Backup: The Hybrid Network Strategy

The highlight of this new hybrid network is its uninterrupted power transmission capability. The network keeps an active backup ready for the grid’s load. If any single power unit experiences a technical glitch or an unexpected failure, the hybrid system instantly reroutes and transmits electricity through an alternate line within a fraction of a second, ensuring consumers experience zero downtime.

The physical rollout of this high-tech infrastructure is already moving at a rapid pace across several key hubs:

  • Nehru Nagar: Work on the 110 kV capacity substation has been successfully completed under the hybrid current network initiative.
  • Kanabargi & Shri nagar: Modernization work is actively underway at the Kanabargi 110 kV substation and the Shri nagar 33 kV substation.
  • Sadashiva Nagar: The existing 33 kV substation is being upgraded to a much higher 110 kV capacity.
  • Machhe: Upgradation of the massive 220 kV substation is currently in an advanced stage of progress.

To guarantee seamless electricity to the heart of the city, a brand new 110 kV substation is being built near the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) campus.

Furthermore, a massive 220 kV switching station is coming up in Kanabargi, which will serve as the central command center managing the entire power grid of Belagavi city.

Massive 700-Kilometer Underground Cabling Project

Recognizing that Belagavi’s industries, IT companies, services sector, and primary infrastructure need an unwavering, high-quality power supply to operate efficiently, KPTCL is tackling the root cause of frequent distribution faults: overhead lines.

Strong winds, heavy rains, and falling tree branches frequently snap overhead lines, causing prolonged blackouts. To bypass this entirely, KPTCL has begun laying approximately 700 kilometers of high-tension 11 kV underground cables across the district.

Alongside this layout, the process of charging the newly built and upgraded substations required to support the hybrid network is moving forward in full swing.

Powering Up for the EV Boom

This infrastructure overhaul will also act as the backbone for the city’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle ecosystem. With citizens buying more EVs, the demand for charging facilities has skyrocketed.

The North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) is planning a dedicated EV bus charging station to power its upcoming fleet of electric buses. To facilitate this, KPTCL has successfully enhanced the capacity of the local 11 kV power grid. Ultimately, this expanded capacity will not only benefit state-run transport but will also provide ready-made, high-load power access to private companies looking to set up commercial EV charging hubs across the city.
