In a profound act of humanity, the family of a 58-year-old brain-dead man has donated his organs to save lives.
To facilitate the complex organ retrieval process, a ‘green corridor’ with zero traffic was created from Bagalkote to Belagavi on Sunday.
The donor, Dundappa Kenchakkanavar, a resident of Junnur village in Mudhol taluk, had suffered critical head injuries in a recent road accident.
He was admitted to the Hanagal Kumareshwar Super Speciality Hospital in Bagalkote, where he was placed on life support. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, he was declared brain-dead.
Recognizing the potential to save other lives, hospital authorities counselled the grieving family about organ donation. Demonstrating immense courage in their hour of grief, Dundappa’s family immediately gave their consent to donate his eyes and liver.
As the final medical procedures for the organ retrieval needed to be conducted at the K.L.E. Hospital in Belagavi, Dr. Naveen Charantimath, Project Director of Kumareshwar Hospital, reached out to the police department for assistance in transporting the patient swiftly.
Responding instantly to the emergency, Bagalkote District Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddharth Goyal coordinated with the traffic department to clear the route.
A zero-traffic corridor was quickly established, ensuring the ambulance carrying Dundappa could travel from Bagalkote to Belagavi without any traffic delays, saving crucial time for the life-saving procedure.
