Karnataka Minister for Urban Development, Dr. Yatindra Siddaramaiah, conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing developmental and civic infrastructure projects across Belagavi City on Tuesday, July 28.
Following the site visits, the Minister chaired a comprehensive progress review meeting at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha to evaluate local administration, town planning, and urban welfare schemes.
Inspection of Waste Management and Water Supply Projects
Turmuri Solid Waste Management Plant : Dr. Siddaramaiah began his inspection at the Turmuri Solid Waste Management Plant. The Belagavi City Corporation-run facility scientifically processes around 238 tonnes of solid waste daily, producing 12 to 16 tonnes of organic fertilizer for local farmers.
The remaining non-recyclable waste is transformed into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) and supplied to cement factories for industrial use.
Commending the initiative, the Minister noted that converting waste into resources is a vital step toward building a clean, green, and sustainable city.
Basavanakolla Water Treatment Plant : The Minister then evaluated the ongoing construction of the 31 MLD (Million Liters per Day) Basavanakolla Water Treatment Plant, accompanied by local elected representatives and officials. The plant, designed to ensure continuous, clean drinking water supply, has achieved 70% completion.
Dr. Siddaramaiah directed officials to expedite the final construction phase and make the facility operational for the public at the earliest.
Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) : Later in the day, the delegation reviewed the progress of the 70 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) being constructed in Halaga village, Belagavi taluk. With 90% of the civil work completed, the project is currently in its final stages. The Minister took stock of technical details and progress metrics, instructing engineers to resolve remaining minor issues without delay.
High-Level Review Meeting at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha
Following the field visits, Dr. Siddaramaiah chaired a high-level review meeting in Room No. 354 at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.
The session brought together senior officials from the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC), the Belagavi Urban Development Authority (BUDA), and the Belagavi Smart City Project.
During the meeting, the Minister issued several critical mandates to ensure civic efficiency and urban discipline:
- Public Sanitation: All public toilets across the city must remain open, fully operational, and maintained to strict hygiene standards.
- Language Compliance: The mandatory display of Kannada signboards at all government offices, commercial establishments, and institutions must be strictly enforced.
- Project Timelines: All urban development schemes must adhere to strict deadlines without project delays.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Priority must be given to clearing legacy waste and immediately repairing damaged city roads.
Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, Dr. Siddaramaiah emphasized that through active collaboration between officials and public representatives, Belagavi will be developed into a model city with world-class infrastructure.
