NIPANI: In a major development for the Karnataka-Maharashtra border region, the much-anticipated survey for the direct railway line connecting Belagavi and Kolhapur has officially commenced.
This project, which has been pending for decades, is expected to provide a significant boost to connectivity, trade, and tourism across the border areas.
Project Details
The proposed broad-gauge railway line will span approximately 58 kilometers and is planned to pass through Parkanhatti and Sankeshwar. The survey work has been entrusted to Pune-based Monarch Surveyors and Engineering Consultants Ltd., with an allocated budget of approximately ₹55 lakh.
To ensure precision and efficiency, the technical team from the railway administration is utilizing advanced technology, including drones and GPS, for site inspection, measurements, and drafting the project layout.
The team is currently mapping the proposed route, documenting the specific villages and agricultural lands involved, and identifying requirements for bridges, tunnels, and potential new railway stations.
Addressing Connectivity Challenges
Currently, travelers moving between Belagavi and Kolhapur must travel via Miraj, which significantly increases both travel time and cost.
The new, direct line is expected to drastically reduce commute times. Once completed, this route will create a seamless rail network connecting major cities, including Dharwad, Kittur, Belagavi, Sankeshwar, and Kolhapur.
Economic and Social Impact
The realization of this railway link is anticipated to have far-reaching benefits:
- Trade and Industry: It will provide a major impetus to Kolhapur’s trade markets and textile industry.
- Tourism and Pilgrimage: The line will simplify travel for tourists and pilgrims, including those visiting the Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) Temple in Kolhapur and various religious sites in the border region.
- Regional Development: The project is viewed as a vital link that will provide a new direction for interstate commerce and passenger transport.
Years of Advocacy
The commencement of this physical survey comes after years of persistent follow-ups by local representatives, passenger associations, and residents of the border region.
With the survey now underway, there is renewed optimism among stakeholders that this crucial infrastructure project will soon become a reality, bridging the gap between the two states and fostering closer economic and social ties.
