BELAGAVI – A coalition of citizens, local organizations, and community groups has launched an urgent appeal for a major infrastructural overhaul in Belagavi, calling for the construction of a 9-kilometer elevated railway track on viaducts.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Bayalu Foundation, aims to address persistent traffic congestion and safety concerns caused by the city’s current railway infrastructure.
Addressing “Unscientific” Infrastructure
The proposal argues that existing Railway Overbridges (ROBs) in the city were constructed without adequate urban planning, leading to safety hazards and disrupted urban mobility. By shifting the railway tracks to an elevated viaduct, the project seeks to eliminate all nine existing level crossings within the city limits.
Advocates for the project highlight several key benefits:
- Reduced Congestion: Elevating the tracks would free up ground-level space, significantly easing traffic flow.
- Enhanced Safety and Access: The move would eliminate dangerous level crossings and streamline access for emergency services, including ambulances.
- Economic Growth: Removing obstructive ROBs is expected to facilitate the movement of heavy commercial vehicles, supporting local industry and trade.
- Urban Renewal: The project is framed as an opportunity for aesthetic improvement and city-wide modernization.
A Call for Equitable Development
The petition explicitly highlights a perceived disparity in infrastructure investment, noting that similar successful projects have been implemented in Northern Indian cities like Kurukshetra, Nagpur, and Kanpur. Examples cited include the Kurukshetra Elevated Track, which bypassed five level crossings, and the extensive 44 km elevated corridor in Nagpur.
Furthermore, the appeal emphasizes the need to protect Belagavi’s cultural heritage, including historic temples such as the Kapileshwara Temple, from the encroachment often associated with traditional infrastructure expansion.
The organizers draw parallels to government-backed heritage corridor projects, such as the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi, to demonstrate how development can coexist with cultural preservation.
Next Steps
The initiative, backed by 1,000 signatures, has been submitted to relevant authorities, including the Prime Minister’s Office and the Railway Ministry.
“This project is not merely an infrastructural upgrade; it is a commitment to bettering the quality of life for all citizens,” the appeal states, calling on local and national leaders to prioritize the sustainable development of the region.
