Belagavi Police Deploy 290 AI Cameras Across 145 Locations

BELAGAVI — In a major push toward tech-driven policing and smart traffic management, the Belagavi District Police have officially launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered camera surveillance network across the district.

The initiative aims to curb rising traffic violations, lower road accident rates, and strengthen overall public safety. According to District Superintendent of Police (SP) K. Ramarajan, the department has issued a stern warning to habitual traffic offenders: pay outstanding fines promptly or face immediate vehicle seizure.

Phased Deployment Across 145 Locations

To ensure comprehensive coverage, the police department has mapped out a massive infrastructure deployment plan. A total of 290 AI-enabled cameras are scheduled to be strategically positioned across 145 high-risk locations, including major town centers, highways, congested public intersections, and borders.

As part of the initial phase of the rollout, 30 AI cameras have already been fully installed and are currently operational across 15 locations.

Automated Violation Tracking

The newly deployed AI system is equipped to automatically detect and log an array of traffic offenses without requiring manual human monitoring. Key violations tracked by the system include:

  • Riding two-wheelers without a protective helmet
  • Excessive speeding
  • Reckless, careless, and dangerous driving
  • Various other infractions of the Motor Vehicles Act

Once a violation is successfully flagged by the AI network, the system automatically generates an official notice and issues a corresponding digital challan (fine) directly to the registered vehicle owner.

Cracking Down on Evaders and Crime

Beyond simple traffic discipline, these advanced cameras will act as a critical tool for local law enforcement. The AI infrastructure is designed to monitor and assist in tracking criminal activities across the district.

SP K. Ramarajan emphasized that the system will actively trace and identify vehicles with long-standing, unpaid penalties. Moving forward, ground teams will be deployed to track down these specific vehicles, leading to swift on-the-spot seizures if the owners fail to settle their dues.

With the district witnessing a concerning number of annual road fatalities, authorities are strictly enforcing the rules. Citizens are advised to adhere to traffic safety guidelines and check for any outstanding digital challans online to avoid facing severe legal penalties or losing possession of their vehicles.
