In a major step towards modernising civic infrastructure and boosting local economic activity, the Belagavi Cantonment Board has approved a ₹14.60 crore Urban Infrastructure Development Plan under the Urban Challenge Fund Scheme.
The proposal focuses on creating revenue-generating public infrastructure that is expected to strengthen the Board’s financial sustainability while improving public amenities.
The Board stated that the loan component will be serviced and repaid through the revenue generated by the proposed commercial and public infrastructure projects.
Key Projects Proposed
The ₹14.60 crore development package includes five major projects:
- Commercial Complex with Lodging Facility – Construction of first and second floors over an existing building in GLR Survey No. 299-B at an estimated cost of ₹2.11 crore.
- Restaurant/Food Court Near the Lake – Development of a lakeside restaurant and food court in GLR Survey No. 129 for ₹1.16 crore.
- Food Court Near INOX Theatre – A new food court on Head Post Office Road near the INOX theatre at a cost of ₹1.51 crore.
- Shopping and Office Complex – Development of first and second floors opposite the Honda showroom in GLR Survey No. 269 for ₹6.07 crore, the largest component of the plan.
- Open-Air Theatre and Multipurpose Hall – Construction of an open-air theatre and multipurpose hall near the existing community hall in GLR Survey No. 129 at an estimated cost of ₹3.75 crore.
Funding Pattern
The project will be implemented through a three-way funding model:
- Government of India Grant (25%) – ₹3.65 crore
- Belagavi Cantonment Board Contribution (25%) – ₹3.65 crore
- Bank/PPP Funding (50%) – ₹7.30 crore
Expected Benefits
According to the proposal, the projects are aimed at:
- Developing modern urban infrastructure.
- Creating new business and employment opportunities.
- Strengthening the Cantonment Board’s revenue through commercial assets.
- Promoting a self-reliant and financially sustainable cantonment.
Once implemented, the projects are expected to enhance public facilities, encourage commercial activity, and contribute to the long-term development of the Belagavi Cantonment area.
