A portion of the under-construction side embankment along the Pune–Bengaluru Highway (NH-48) near Gandhi Hospital in Nipani collapsed on Wednesday (29, July) following continuous rainfall in the region.
Following the incident, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued a clarification stating that the erosion occurred along the under-construction approach of a Light Vehicle Underpass (LVUP) located on the Sankeshwar Bypass to the Maharashtra Border section of NH-48.
According to NHAI officials, Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) had not yet been laid at the site, and construction work was still at the sub-grade level with only partial Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) completed.
Heavy rainfall triggered a sudden flow of surface water through the sub-grade layer, eroding a 7 to 10-meter stretch of the approach embankment wall.
Authorities confirmed that traffic movement on the highway remained completely normal despite the collapse. Because the main carriageway is actively under construction, vehicle traffic was already diverted and operating smoothly along the adjacent service road.
No injuries or vehicular damages were reported. NHAI officials assured that emergency repair teams have been deployed to the site and restoration works are being carried out on a priority basis to stabilize the embankment.
