Hindalco Industries Limited has commissioned India’s first greenfield Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) manufacturing facility in Belagavi, Karnataka. The 30,000-tonne annual capacity plant marks a major milestone for domestic production of high-value specialty alumina, significantly reducing the country’s reliance on imports for critical fire-safety materials.
Boosting Domestic Fire Safety and EV Infrastructure
PPT ATH is a critical, halogen-free flame-retardant material used in Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites, and paints. When exposed to heat, the compound suppresses flames and smoke generation without releasing toxic halogen acid gases.
The plant’s initial 30,000-tonne Phase 1 capacity is engineered to meet nearly the entire domestic demand from India’s wire and cable sector, driven by stricter fire standards (such as BIS standard IS 17048:2018) and rapid adoption across electric vehicles (EVs) and modern infrastructure. Hindalco plans to scale the facility to 60,000 tonnes in phased expansions.
Hindalco will market the solution under the brand name InnoSafe, targeting next-generation infrastructure, rail systems, and mobility sectors.
In-House Innovation Meets 100% Green Power
Developed entirely through Hindalco’s in-house R&D from “flask-to-factory,” the Belagavi unit features automated process controls and an integrated manufacturing ecosystem for precise quality control.
The facility is the world’s only specialty alumina plant powered entirely by 100% renewable energy, utilizing a blend of biomass, solar, and wind sources. The Belagavi refinery achieved a greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of 0.44 tCO2e per tonne of alumina (YTD FY26).
