Belagavi South MLA Abhay Patil met with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to request the transfer of Defence land in Belagavi to the Government of Karnataka.
The proposed transfer aims to facilitate the establishment of a state-of-the-art IT and Semiconductor Park in the region.
During the high-level meeting, Patil emphasized the strategic importance of expanding technology infrastructure beyond Bengaluru to boost regional development in North Karnataka.
He urged the Centre to hand over the land parcel to help attract investments in high-tech research, software development, and semiconductor manufacturing.
The said land which originally belongs to Belagavi village is located adjacent to the National Highway(NH) 4, and is ideal for the development of IT park. Though the state government had ordered for the resumption of this land in November 2012, it still continues to be in possession of the defence department.
In the event that the land cannot be directly transferred to the state government, Patil proposed an alternative solution: establishing a Defence Manufacturing Unit directly on the site.
“Setting up either an IT and Semiconductor Park or a Defence Manufacturing Unit on this land will unlock massive economic potential and generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for the youth of Belagavi,” Patil noted during the discussions.
The central government is expected to evaluate the feasibility of the proposal in consultation with the Ministry of Defence and state authorities.
