Belagavi to Get CNG Production Plant: A Major Leap in Waste-to-Energy Initiative

In a significant move toward sustainable urban development, the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has entered into an agreement with GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) to establish a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) production plant.

This project aims to transform the city’s wet waste into clean energy, addressing both waste management and fuel needs.

Project Overview and Investment

The initiative is backed by the Central Government and involves a substantial investment to modernize Belagavi’s infrastructure.

  • Total Estimated Cost: Approximately ₹100 Crores.
  • Capacity: The city generates roughly 215 tonnes of wet waste daily from its 58 wards.
  • Production Goal: The plant is expected to process this waste to produce 4 to 5 tonnes of Bio-CNG and nearly 10 tonnes of organic manure every day.
  • Land Requirement: The State Government has been requested to provide 10 acres of land for the setup. Officials are currently in the process of identifying a suitable location on the outskirts of the city.

Environmental and Economic Impact

This project is being hailed as a “milestone” for the city’s hygiene and environmental health. By converting waste into wealth, the city expects several key benefits:

  1. Scientific Waste Disposal: Provides a permanent, eco-friendly solution to the growing problem of wet waste management.
  2. Resource Recovery: Aside from fuel, the byproduct of organic manure will be available for agricultural use.
  3. Cost Savings: The City Corporation currently spends crores of rupees annually on waste transport and disposal. This plant is expected to save the BCC crores of rupees over time.
  4. Strengthening Fuel Supply: The produced CNG will bolster the existing distribution network, providing a steady supply for domestic piped gas (PNG) and vehicles.

“The agreement with GAIL is a major step forward for Belagavi. By processing wet waste into gas, we are not only solving a disposal problem but also contributing to a cleaner environment. We have requested 10 acres of land to begin work immediately.”
Karthik M, Belagavi City Corporation Commissioner

Strengthening the Gas Distribution Network

Currently, Belagavi is already seeing progress in the distribution of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to households and CNG for vehicles. GAIL officials have noted that the addition of a local production plant will provide “extra strength” to the existing supply chain, ensuring more consistent and reliable energy for the residents of the city.
