The long-anticipated flyover project in Belagavi, designed to serve as a landmark solution to the city’s burgeoning traffic congestion, is moving steadily toward the execution phase.
With the state government having sanctioned ₹270 crore for the first phase, the tendering process is now in its final stages and will be called within a week.
Groundwork Progressing Rapidly
While the formal tender process nears completion, on-ground preparations have accelerated significantly. Recent weeks have seen coordinated efforts by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Forest Department to map and number trees along the proposed route, a critical precursor to upcoming civil works.
Technical groundwork is also clearly visible across the city’s landscape:
- Alignment Markings: Road surface markings and pillar alignment indicators have been installed along the stretch from Sankam Hotel toward the Central Bus Stand, signaling the precise path of the proposed elevated corridor.
- Technical Surveys: Engineering teams have been actively conducting surveys between Ashok Pillar Circle and Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle, ensuring the project’s technical viability before heavy machinery is deployed.
A Multi-Phase Infrastructure Vision
The project is envisioned as a multi-corridor elevated structure spanning approximately 4.5 km in its initial implementation.
It is designed to connect National Highway-48 near Sankam Hotel to Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Circle, passing through several of the city’s most congested transit points, including Ashok Circle and Sangolli Rayanna (RTO) Circle.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan has emphasized the importance of inter-departmental coordination to ensure the project’s smooth execution.
According to infrastructure experts, while the project is being fast-tracked, the sheer scale of building a multi-lane elevated corridor—supported by hundreds of pillars—means that the full construction phase will likely span the next 3 to 4 years.
Addressing Public Concerns
The project has undergone several rounds of public consultation to ensure that the needs of local traders, residents, and institutions are addressed.
Officials have reiterated that the construction will be managed in phases to minimize disruptions to daily traffic. Once completed, the flyover is expected to significantly reduce idling times at major junctions and provide seamless connectivity between the Bengaluru-Pune National Highway and the Belagavi-Panaji National Highway, providing much-needed relief to the city’s commuters.
As the tender process reaches its climax, residents and stakeholders are hopeful that the shift from planning to physical construction will commence without further delay.
