In a major crackdown on traffic non-compliance, the newly deployed Artificial Intelligence (AI) traffic surveillance system across Belagavi has recorded a staggering 2,33,892 traffic violations in just a 40-day window between June 4 and July 15.
The high-tech enforcement drive has hit errant motorists hard, with total penal levies breaching the ₹5 crore mark, signaling a rigid shift toward automated digital policing in the region.
The Breakdown of Violations
Data released by the department highlights that riding without a protective headgear remains the most rampant offense in the district.
- Helmet Violations: 68,025 cases (Accounting for over ₹3 crore in fines alone)
- Seat Belt Violations: 30,536 cases
- Other Offenses: 1,00,161 cases (Including triple riding on two-wheelers, mobile phone usage while driving, and signal jumping)
Expanding the Digital Net
The AI-powered camera network, which automatically detects violations, captures license plates, and generates e-challans, is no longer restricted to the core city limits. The district police have aggressively expanded this tech umbrella to busy junctions in major taluka towns, including Bailhongal and Athani.
Local authorities have noted that while the initial numbers reveal widespread non-compliance, the visual presence of AI enforcement is progressively forcing a behavioral shift among commuters.
“The objective is not just penalization, but creating a psychological deterrence. We are already seeing improved compliance at major intersections where these cameras are active,” stated a senior transit official.
With the automated system operating 24/7, district police have urged citizens to strictly adhere to speed limits, wear seat belts, and secure helmets properly, reiterating that road safety must remain every commuter’s top priority.
