In a major push toward achieving a 7-Star Garbage-Free City rating under the nationwide Swachh Bharat Mission, the Belagavi Cantonment Board has rolled out a comprehensive Smart Litter Bin Management Plan.
The initiative follows the successful completion of a comprehensive field survey mapping 583 public dustbins across key urban hubs, with an estimated project cost of approximately ₹46 lakh.
The blueprint focuses on strategic placement, high-density placement in heavy footfall areas, and strict collection schedules to modernize public sanitation.
Strategic Priority Zones & Spacing Guidelines
To maximize efficiency and eliminate litter hotspots, the plan categorizes urban areas into four distinct priority tiers, dictating bin placement density:
- Very High Priority (30–50 m spacing): High-density spots including markets, food streets, bus stops, schools, and public parks.
- High Priority (75–100 m spacing): Main roads, commercial thoroughfares, and hospital zones.
- Medium Priority (150–200 m spacing): Residential colonies and community gathering points.
- Low Priority: Open green areas and defense land, where bins will be placed strictly at entry/exit points.
Under this plan, 40–45% of total bins will be concentrated in High Priority Zones, including the Camp Market/Main Bazaar (spaced every 40 m), Public Markets (every 30–40 m), Khanapur Road commercial stretches (every 50 m), and food eatery zones (every 30–40 m). Twin bins will also be deployed at every bus boarding stop and religious entrance, while weekly markets will utilize portable bins for seasonal waste.

The framework introduces tailored bin configurations and collection cadences depending on local waste generation rates:

Focus on Source Segregation
At the core of the plan is strict source segregation. Twin-bin stations featuring color-coded receptacles—Green for Wet Waste and Blue for Dry Waste—will be installed at all designated points to streamline post-collection recycling and waste processing.
With the mantra “Clean City, Healthy Citizens, A Greener Tomorrow!”, the Belagavi Cantonment Board aims to significantly boost civic hygiene, curb open dumping, and establish a cleaner urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
