Belagavi Police Implements ‘No Helmet, No Fuel’ Rule to Curb Two-Wheeler Fatalities

BELAGAVI: In a strict move to enhance public safety and enforce traffic discipline, the Belagavi City Police has announced a mandatory “No Helmet, No Fuel” policy across all petrol bunks within the city limits.

The initiative is part of a special “Helmet Awareness Campaign” (Helmet Jagruthi Abhiyaan) scheduled to run from June 15, 2026, to June 21, 2026.

Alarming Accident Statistics

According to official data released by the Police Commissioner’s office, the lack of helmet compliance among two-wheeler riders and pillion riders has led to devastating consequences over the last decade. In the past 10 years within Belagavi city limits:

  • 358 people lost their lives in road accidents.
  • 1,492 people sustained severe injuries.
To address this grave public safety issue and encourage 100% mandatory helmet usage, the police department is seeking active cooperation from local businesses and citizens.

Strict Enforcement at Petrol Pumps

As part of the campaign, an explicit directive has been issued to fuel stations. On June 19, 2026, all petrol bunks are strictly required to:

  1. Display prominent signboards reading “No Helmet – No Fuel” (ಹೆಲ್ಮೆಟ್ ಧರಿಸಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಇಂಧನ ಇಲ್ಲ).
  2. Deny fuel sales to any two-wheeler rider or pillion rider who arrives at the station without wearing a helmet.
The Police Commissioner of Belagavi City has instructed fuel station owners and their staff to strictly enforce these guidelines, emphasizing that public safety is a collective responsibility.

Local authorities hope that hitting non-compliant riders where it hurts most—their fuel tanks—will drastically improve helmet usage and significantly lower the rate of fatal head injuries in the city.
