The historic Kapileshwara Temple, often revered as the “Dakshina Kashi” of Belagavi, has introduced a new dress code policy to maintain the sanctity and religious decorum of its premises. Starting as a pilot initiative on April 1, the temple administration is now actively enforcing guidelines regarding appropriate attire for visitors.
Why the Change?
The decision comes after temple authorities noted a growing trend of visitors wearing casual or Western clothing, which many devotees felt was inappropriate for a place of worship. Reports indicated that some visitors were treating the temple like a tourist destination—even going as far as recording social media reels in front of the deity—which disrupted the peaceful atmosphere for those coming to pray.
What the New Rules Say
The temple committee has installed clear signboards at the entrance to guide devotees. The new rules prohibit:
- For Men: Half-pants (Bermudas) and similar casual shorts.
- For Women: Nighties, gowns, and other revealing or casual attire.
The guidelines emphasize the importance of traditional clothing. Specifically, for women, if they are not wearing a saree, they are required to carry a dupatta (stole/scarf) to cover themselves appropriately.
Community Response
The move has been met with largely positive feedback from regular devotees. Local residents pointed out that because the temple is located in a residential area, it is common for neighbors to visit after household chores, sometimes forgetting to change out of casual loungewear.
As the temple continues to serve as a major spiritual hub, attracting thousands of devotees daily—and upwards of ten thousand on Mondays and special occasions—the administration hopes these guidelines will ensure that everyone can experience the peace and reverence the historic site is known for.
