Belagavi Member of Parliament Jagadish Shettar met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday and brought several key issues concerning the city to his attention, including delays affecting the Belagavi airport and alleged irregularities by the Cantonment Board.
Airport Land Issue Raises Closure Concerns
During the meeting, Shettar highlighted a critical issue related to the development of a separate taxiway at Belagavi Airport. Around 16 acres of land currently under the control of the Indian Air Force is required for the project.
He informed the Defence Minister that the district administration has already identified and agreed to provide equivalent land in exchange. However, the Air Force authorities have not responded positively to the proposal. Due to this delay, Shettar warned that the airport could face operational disruptions and even risk closure if the issue is not resolved promptly.
He urged the Minister to intervene and direct concerned officials to expedite the process.
Allegations Against Cantonment Board
The MP also raised concerns regarding the actions of the Belagavi Cantonment Board. He alleged that the Board had leased approximately 6,045 square feet of land under GLR S.No 324-1 for setting up a flower market without informing the elected representative, calling the move illegal.
Shettar pointed out that an existing government-approved flower market is already functioning in Ashok Nagar. Establishing another market within city limits requires permission from the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), which, he said, has not been obtained.
He further stated that despite the legal requirements, Cantonment authorities have allowed the construction of sheds and the opening of a second flower market at the proposed site. This has reportedly led to opposition from local flower vendors and traders.
The MP requested that clear directions be issued to ensure that any future decisions by the Cantonment Board must involve consultation with elected representatives such as MPs and MLAs. He also urged the Minister to take necessary action to cancel the lease granted for the proposed flower market.
Assurance from the Defence Minister
After listening to all the concerns in detail, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured that he would speak to the concerned authorities and issue appropriate instructions to address the issues raised.
The meeting underscores growing concerns over infrastructure and administrative decisions in Belagavi, with calls for timely intervention from the central government to safeguard key public assets and ensure lawful governance.
