Members of the Belagavi City Corporation have raised serious concerns against Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the contractor responsible for implementing the continuous drinking water supply project in the city, alleging violations of norms and poor-quality execution of pipeline works.
The issue was discussed during a drinking water progress review meeting held on Monday at the Corporation Council Hall. Corporators pointed out that several roads dug up for pipeline installation have not been restored, leading to potholes on both sides and causing inconvenience to residents. They urged authorities to take immediate action against L&T and impose penalties.
Corporator Ravi Dotre criticized the lack of oversight, stating that although L&T has been working on the project for several years, Corporation engineers have failed to inspect the quality of the work. “Despite spending crores of rupees, no action has been taken so far. Action should first be initiated against the concerned engineers, followed by action against L&T,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Hanumant Kongali expressed strong dissatisfaction, noting that roads across the city remain dug up and unrepaired. “Even after imposing fines twice and issuing warnings for not adhering to rules, there has been no improvement in their functioning. If this continues, the contract may have to be cancelled,” he warned.
He also directed officials to ensure that alternative arrangements are in place to prevent drinking water shortages during the summer. While stating that there is sufficient water in reservoirs, he cautioned against the spread of false information regarding water scarcity on social media and urged prompt action to address such misinformation.
Mayor Preeti Kamakar instructed that all pending drinking water supply works must be completed within the stipulated timeline. She also emphasized the need to finish incomplete road restoration works and take preventive measures to avoid any disruption in water supply.
Nominated member Dr. Dinesh Nashipudi also spoke at the meeting. Corporation Commissioner Karthik M., along with Lakshmi Nippanikar and other officials, were present.
