In a significant move to enhance road safety and commuter comfort, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced plans to develop comprehensive Wayside Amenities (WSAs) along critical stretches of National Highway 48 (NH-48) in Karnataka.
The initiative aims to combat the rising number of accidents caused by driver fatigue and drowsiness by providing modern, “all-in-one” rest stops for long-distance travelers.
Focus on Strategic Corridors
The development will specifically target high-traffic sections under the jurisdiction of the Bengaluru Regional Office.
Key corridors identified for these facilities include:
- Belagavi – Kolhapur
- Tumakuru – Chitradurga
- Chitradurga – Hubballi
A “World-Class” Travel Experience
Managed by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (a wholly-owned special purpose vehicle of the NHAI), the project will utilize private land through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The proposed WSAs are designed to be more than just pit stops. They are expected to house a variety of integrated facilities to prevent the need for multiple stops:
- Rest & Hygiene: Designated rest areas and clean, modern restrooms.
- Fuel & Maintenance: Fuel stations and ample parking for both light and heavy vehicles.
- Dining: Diverse food courts and eateries.
- Convenience: Retail shops and essential services for travelers.
Public Sentiment
The plan has been met with enthusiasm from frequent highway users who currently rely on scattered roadside restaurants. Motorists highlighted that having fuel, food, and restrooms in a single, secure location would significantly reduce travel stress and time.
Beyond safety, the NHAI expects this initiative to stimulate local economies along the transport corridors by generating employment and supporting local businesses through the new service hubs.
