Belagavi Corporation Demands ₹250 Cr Special Grant; CM D.K. Shivakumar Assures Action

A high-level delegation from the Belagavi City Corporation, led by Mayor Preeti Kamkar and Deputy Mayor Hanumant Kongali, met with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to submit a formal memorandum demanding a special grant of ₹250 crores.

The funds are requested to develop basic infrastructure in the city and to cover the expenses incurred during the winter assembly session.

The delegation met the Chief Minister during the progress review meeting of various departments of the Belagavi division held at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. During the meeting, they strongly urged the CM to announce the special allocation for the comprehensive development of the city.

Financial Burden of the Winter Session

The delegation highlighted that the Belagavi City Corporation currently bears the management expenses of the annual winter legislature session held at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

Given the rapid growth of the city, providing fundamental amenities such as drinking water, roads, streetlights, parks, and electricity has become a highly challenging task.

Furthermore, a significant portion of the corporation’s revenue collected from taxes is exhausted on administrative office expenses and staff salaries. As a result, the corporation is heavily dependent on government aid, making it nearly impossible to take up independent major development projects. Therefore, they emphasized that the state government must step in with this special financial package.

Positive Assurance from the Chief Minister

Responding positively to the memorandum, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar assured the delegation that the state government would take necessary measures to announce a special grant.

He stated that the funds would be allocated keeping in mind the comprehensive development of Belagavi city and the convenience of its citizens. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor expressed optimism following the Chief Minister’s reassuring response.
