In a major push to improve passenger safety, the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has issued strict directives to all divisional units regarding the mandatory closure of bus doors during operations.
The decision follows a recent video conference held on Friday, June 19, 2026, presided over by the corporation’s Managing Director, Priyanga. During the meeting, concerns were raised regarding a rise in accidents where passengers fell from buses due to doors being left open. It was noted that at least four accidents have occurred within the division specifically attributed to this negligence.
A Victory for Public Advocacy
This directive marks a significant victory for local accountability and social media activism. Previously, Belagavi Infra had highlighted the recurring issue of NWKRTC bus operators failing to utilize automatic doors on social media. This public campaign brought the dangerous practice to the attention of the authorities, and the NWKRTC’s recent implementation of these strict measures serves as a direct, tangible impact of that advocacy.
Strict Action Against Violations
To prevent further accidents, the Divisional Controller has mandated that inspection teams verify whether conductors are keeping bus doors closed while the vehicle is in motion.
The order explicitly states:
- Door Protocol: If a bus door is functional but a conductor fails to keep it closed while the bus is in operation, a case must be registered against the conductor.
- Seating Regulations: Inspectors have been instructed to monitor conductor behavior. If a conductor is found sitting next to the driver instead of occupying their designated seat, this will be treated as a violation, and a case will be registered against them.
Inspectors have been ordered to ensure that bus doors are in good working condition during their checks.
These measures are effective immediately, and inspection teams are required to submit reports on actions taken to the traffic branch.
The move comes as part of a broader effort by the corporation to enforce discipline and ensure the safety of passengers traveling on NWKRTC buses, showing that the corporation is now responsive to public feedback regarding commuter safety.
