Genelia D’Souza promotes Ilkal Saree at Bigg Boss Marathi Grand Finale

Actor Genelia D’Souza brought Karnataka’s traditional handloom into the spotlight by wearing an Ilkal saree during the grand finale of Bigg Boss Marathi. Her appearance at the widely viewed event has drawn praise for promoting indigenous textiles on a national platform.

The Ilkal saree, native to Ilkal in Bagalkot, is one of Karnataka’s most distinctive handloom weaves. It is known for its unique weaving technique called tope teni, where the pallu is separately woven and later joined to the body of the saree. The saree features bold contrast borders (locally called tode paras) and a characteristic red or maroon pallu with traditional motifs.

Another defining element of the Ilkal tradition is the use of “Ilkal Khunn” fabric, typically paired as a blouse material, adding to the cultural authenticity of the attire. These sarees are widely worn during festivals, weddings, and religious occasions across North Karnataka.

The handloom industry in and around Ilkal supports thousands of weavers and artisan families, forming an important part of the rural economy in the Bagalkot region. However, like many traditional crafts, it faces challenges from mechanised production and changing fashion trends.

Industry observers note that appearances like this help revive interest in handloom products, create awareness among younger audiences, and contribute to sustaining age-old weaving practices.

Genelia’s choice of attire has been widely appreciated on social media, with many calling it a proud representation of Karnataka’s heritage on a national stage.

With increasing visibility through popular platforms, the Ilkal saree continues to gain recognition—bridging tradition with contemporary fashion while reinforcing regional identity.
