After years of delays and uncertainty, the long-awaited Belagavi Ring Road project is finally moving towards execution, offering hope for a major transformation in the city’s transportation network and regional connectivity.
The ambitious 69.42-kilometre Ring Road project, conceived to decongest Belagavi city and facilitate seamless movement of freight and long-distance traffic, is expected to be completed within three years once construction begins. The project is being implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme.
The project, estimated at around ₹1,622 crore for its first phase, will divert heavy vehicles away from city roads, significantly reducing congestion on major corridors while improving connectivity between highways leading towards Bengaluru, Pune, Goa, Hyderabad and other key destinations.
A major breakthrough has been achieved in land acquisition, with nearly 90 percent of the required 1,248 acres across 32 villages already acquired and handed over to NHAI. However, a small portion of land remains tied up in court disputes, while forest clearance issues have also contributed to delays in recent years.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had laid the foundation stone for the project in February 2024. Tendering activities for the first package have already commenced, while detailed project reports for the remaining sections have been finalized and are awaiting approvals.
The Ring Road is expected to become a game-changing infrastructure project for Belagavi, connecting major national highways while supporting industrial growth, logistics operations and future urban expansion. Once completed, trucks and through-traffic will be able to bypass the city, reducing travel time, fuel consumption and road congestion.
Local leaders and stakeholders have repeatedly urged the Centre to expedite the remaining approvals and begin full-scale construction. With land acquisition largely complete and tendering underway, residents are hopeful that the project will finally move from planning to reality after nearly a decade of delays.
For Belagavi, the Ring Road is more than just a highway project—it is expected to redefine mobility, strengthen regional trade and position the city as a key transportation hub in North Karnataka.
